The Lady Knights were blessed with a beautiful day to run the 2017 State Championship XC race. With tense nerves and high emotions, the cloud cover gave them a break from the sun and one less thing to worry about. Each of the girls was nervous and of course, wanted to do their best. When the gun went off, they set off to do just that.
The top field of girls got off to a blazing fast start going through the first mile in just over 6 minutes. Coming through the first mile and a half, Elizabeth was in a pack at about 15th place and Abigail was in about 30th. They both turned it on in the last half finishing 9th and 19th respectfully. This put them both on the podium for medals and the honor of being placed on the 2nd and 3rd All State Teams! Congratulations to them both. This is Elizabeth’s fourth year to receive All-State Honors.
Near behind Abigail was Taylor. She was sitting in the 40’s and was also just beginning to go to work. She finished her race in a personal course record time and placement in 34th place. Nice job Taylor! Vanessa came through next and looked strong. She worked steady the last mile and had a great kick finish picking off a few runners to help with scoring and giving us all great excitement. She finished 80th and had a fantastic finish to her debut freshman running season. Sarah was not too far behind and while her knees were in extreme pain she kept going and rounded out our scoring in 98th place, securing our 7th place finish, right where we were ranked coming into the meet. Wrapping up our seven runners was Amanda and Naomi who had a great first experience at State as freshmen runners. They both served as valuable displacers and beat the 6th and 7th runners of one of our competitors.
The State XC Championship race is held each year at Cave Creek golf course. It is a super hilly course with the athletes needing to trudge up two steep hills and countless other rolling hills that just eat the legs up along the way. It is a true test of will and championship spirit to be able to run as fast as they do on this course. Great job ladies! It was a great day and a fantastic finish to a wonderful season!
